Santo Domingo, the capital of Dominican Republic, is a huge city, but most of the visitors only focus on the heart of it, the beautiful, historical Colonial City ❤️"After Christopher Columbus's arrival on the island in 1492, Santo Domingo became the site of the first cathedral, hospital, customs house and university in the Americas. This colonial town, founded in 1498, was laid out on a grid pattern that became the model for almost all town planners in the New World." - UNESCO World Heritage ConventionCiudad Colonial is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the Americas, and simply a lovely, historical area to explore. The central square of the district is Parque Colon, with a late-19th-century bronze statue of Christopher Columbus in its center. Right next to the square is the Gothic-style Cathedral Santa María la Menor from the 16th century.Around the square there are old cobblestone streets lined with colorful colonial houses. The highlight of our stay in Bayahibe was a boat tour to the stunningly beautiful Saona Island!😍💚🌴Full day tours to Isla Saona are a super popular activity, and it's easy to understand why - this tropical, protected island has stayed somewhat pristine, and the white beaches, lined with palm trees, look amazing! We don't do a lot organized tours, but this one definitely was a great one.The day started with a speed boat trip to Saona Island, where we then stopped for a couple of hours on a beach for swimming, snorkeling, walking around or sunbathing. Then we moved to Mano Juan village, the only inhabited part of the island, where we had a buffet lunch and a walking tour.On the way back to Bayahibe we stopped to see mangrove trees and to swim in Palmilla "natural pools", in shallow waters with lots of starfish. The day ended with a catamaran ride back to Bayahibe. Oh and during the day there was an almost unlimited flow of Dominican rum, so we really had good time, and there was a dancing party on the catamaran😄🧉🥃A recommendation to do the Saona Island tour if you ever travel to Dominican Republic! Our tour was from Captain Gringo, a company that has been organizing Saona tours for a long time. From Dominicus we moved for a couple of days to the neighboring village of Bayahibe. This beautiful coastal town is more lively than Dominicus, and there is a handful of small backpacker-friendly hostels and hotels, a lot of restaurants and cozy beach bars🌴🍹Also Bayahibe is a touristy place, but there is a bit more local feel. Greetings from the Dominican Republic!🤩Our travels here started from Dominicus, a small village in the easternmost part of the country. Dominicus is best known for the beaches and beach resorts, and it's a starting point for walks in the Cotubanamá National Park🌴We stayed in Dominicus for ten days as house-sitters, taking care of a lovely cat called Spencer. The days were quite busy with work, but we also explored the surroundings of course, had morning runs along the trail that connects Dominicus to Bayahibe and sunset walks on the beach☀️Dominicus is a very touristy village, and there are quite a lot of expats too. Thus it's not the most authentic Dominican experience, but it was a great starting point for our travels in the country, and the beaches sure are beautiful!🥰Have you traveled in the Dominican Republic? The last photo dump from Egypt is a throwback to the shores of the Red Sea😍Hurghada is a well-known, popular destination that has lured in package tour visitors, divers and other travelers for decades. Our visit to Hurghada and El Gouna was mostly work related, so no diving or snorkeling this time, but we still had great time getting to know this side of Egypt, very different from what we saw in Giza and in Luxor.We stayed in Hurghada Marina area, and visited also the fancy El Gouna Marina. El Gouna is a tourist city created in 1990, best-known for the marina, beaches and the El Gouna Film Festival. A small picture collage from the Luxor Temple and LuxorThe Luxor Temple an Ancient Egyptian temple complex located right next the city center of Luxor (ancient Thebes). The temple area was constructed around 1400 BCE, and known as ipet resyt, "the southern sanctuary".Luxor Temple was for a long time buried under a thick layer of sand and stone, before the excavation works started in 1884. During the works, that were sporadic and lasted until 1960, it turned out that large parts of the temple complex was under buildings and other structures that needed to be removed. The Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor is amazing! After visiting the pyramids and beautiful tombs in Giza and Luxor, this site still managed to totally astonish us. It's hard to describe really, you need to see it with your own eyes. It's stunning.The huge site is often called just as the Karnak Temple, but it's not just one temple, it's a city of temples built during a time period of over 2000 years, from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemaic period. The original name of the temple area was Ipet-isut, meaning "The Most Select of Places". It's among the largest religious sites ever built, and the The Hypostyle hall, featuring 134 gigantic columns, is still the largest room of any religious building in the world.Karnak was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the rest of the monumental, ancient city of Thebes.
